Children of the war
Photographic essay // 2024
In the historical memory of Spain, ‘Children of the War’ is defined as those citizens of Spanish origin who, as a result of the Civil War and during their minority, were displaced to other countries, especially to France, England, Belgium, and Russia, and to a lesser extent to other countries such as Switzerland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, and Mexico. Around 30,000 children were evacuated to the various countries previously mentioned to protect them from Francoist bombings. Exactly 2,996 children between 8 and 14 years old were sent to the Soviet Union, with the majority being Basque and Asturian.
This photographic essay captures a morning in which the protagonist, 99-year-old Julio Parrado, born in Gijón, Asturias, immerses himself in his memories to relive his childhood during the Spanish Civil War. The photographic style used is both folkloric and documentary. The goal is to capture the authenticity of his experiences and portray them with respect, allowing the narrative to unfold through the gestures, environment, and gaze of the protagonist.
